SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Korea Bizwire) – The South Korean government announced a comprehensive plan to enhance transparency and strengthen consumer protection in the wedding services market during an economic ministers’ meeting on November 14.

The initiative aims to establish a more reliable framework for engaged couples by improving market structure and addressing consumer complaints in the wedding industry.

The reforms come in response to long-standing issues within the wedding services sector, which has proven difficult to regulate due to its complex structure and classification as an unregistered business category.

Young consumers, in particular, have frequently encountered problems with unexpected additional costs and refund disputes during the contract process.

Starting next year, the government will implement a voluntary price disclosure system for major wedding venues and wedding planning agencies, enabling couples to access transparent pricing information.

Following the enactment of the Wedding Services Act, the government plans to introduce detailed pricing disclosure guidelines for specific service categories, establishing a more systematic management approach.

In the first half of next year, the Korea Consumer Agency’s “Real Price” website will begin pilot testing a feature that displays regional price distributions, making it easier for consumers to compare prices among wedding venues and planning agencies.

The government also plans to establish standard contract terms for wedding planning services by the first quarter of next year. These terms will require clear disclosure of itemized prices for package deals, refund policies, and cancellation fees, while also implementing restrictions on additional charges.

Furthermore, the initiative will provide comparative information about different companies’ refund limitations and penalty fees to help consumers make informed decisions.

For public wedding venues, the government plans to develop service models that reflect couples’ preferences and improve accessibility by collaborating with local governments and industry associations to provide relevant information.

A government official stated, “We will swiftly implement follow-up measures, including the enactment of the Wedding Services Act, to ensure this support plan leads to improved consumer satisfaction during the wedding preparation process,” adding, “We aim to create an environment where engaged couples can plan their weddings with greater transparency and security.”

Public response to the government’s initiative has been positive. One citizen expressed optimism, saying, “Wedding preparations have been both financially and mentally burdensome. With stronger institutional protections in place, I believe we can plan our weddings with greater peace of mind.”
