SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on January 7 the completion of a performance enhancement project for five types of K-series armored vehicles, improving field operability and safety.
The upgraded models include the K200A1 infantry carrier, K242A1 (4.2-inch mortar), K281A1 (81mm mortar), K277A1 command post vehicle, and K288A1 recovery vehicle.
Enhanced Features for Efficiency and Safety
The upgrades integrated previously dispersed dashboard instruments into a consolidated electronic control panel, improving ease of operation for drivers. Mechanical speedometers and tachometers were replaced with electronic versions for more accurate readings, while front and rear cameras with display screens were installed to eliminate blind spots.
DAPA also added power distribution units to simplify electrical systems, increasing reliability in combat scenarios.
Incremental Rollout Plan
The upgrades were implemented on a prototype of each vehicle type, with national defense standards finalized over the two-year project. Moving forward, the enhanced features will be incrementally rolled out to all K-series armored vehicles through future weapon system improvement projects and Army maintenance programs.
DAPA official Park Jung-eun stated, “We will continue to address challenges faced in the field through performance optimization projects, maximizing the functionality and safety of weapon systems.”
The initiative marks a significant step in modernizing South Korea’s armored vehicle fleet, ensuring operational readiness in evolving combat environments.
