DONGHAE, Sept. 12 (Korea Bizwire) – The coastal city of Donghae in Gangwon Province has launched a series of smart bus shelters equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, marking a significant upgrade to its public transportation infrastructure.
City officials announced on September 11 that the new shelters, which go beyond traditional waiting areas, are designed to provide a safe haven from extreme weather conditions and potential safety hazards.
The shelters feature heating and cooling systems, rest areas, and emergency call buttons, addressing the growing need for more comfortable and secure public transit experiences.
The 9.4 billion won project, initiated last year, has resulted in the installation of nine smart bus shelters across Donghae.
These high-tech waiting areas are strategically located at major tourist attractions such as Mureung Valley, Chuam Beach, and Mangsang Beach, as well as high-traffic areas like Hyoga Intersection.
Each smart shelter is equipped with an array of amenities powered by IoT systems, including air purifiers, climate control, Wi-Fi, wireless charging stations, and heated seating.

The shelters also provide real-time bus location information, air quality measurements, emergency alerts, and updates on city news and events.
City officials expressed optimism about the new smart bus shelters, expecting the cutting-edge technology to have a positive impact beyond just public transportation, potentially improving quality of life for residents in general.
Safety features are a key component of the new shelters. Each is outfitted with CCTV cameras, emergency alert buttons, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
The shelters are connected to Donghae’s 24-hour Safety Information Center, enabling real-time monitoring and rapid response to any unusual situations.
The city held an opening ceremony for the smart bus shelter at Mureung Valley, attended by Mayor Shim Gyu-eon, City Council Chairman Lee Dong-ho, and local residents.
