CHANGWON, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – South Gyeongsang Province, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and a social enterprise are joining forces to promote recycling and a culture of sharing by repurposing discarded safety helmets and plastic bottles.
On August 9, the provincial government, KEPCO’s South Gyeongsang branch, and the social enterprise Usisan signed a memorandum of understanding at the provincial office to collaborate on waste upcycling.
Upcycling, a concept that goes beyond traditional recycling, involves adding value to old products.
Usisan, the social enterprise at the heart of this initiative, specializes in transforming waste materials such as plastic bottles and old clothes into eco-friendly products including bags, socks, umbrellas, recycling bins, and towels.
Under the agreement, KEPCO’s South Gyeongsang branch will collect old or damaged safety helmets and used plastic bottles to supply to Usisan.
The social enterprise will then process these materials to produce lightweight safety helmets and provide upcycling consulting and education services.
KEPCO’s regional office will distribute the upcycled lightweight helmets to environmental sanitation workers across South Gyeongsang Province.
The provincial government will oversee the project, monitoring its progress and assisting with the distribution of upcycled products.
To mark the signing of the agreement, KEPCO’s South Gyeongsang branch donated 500 lightweight safety helmets to the provincial government.
