SEOUL, Jul. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — A government-backed South Korean research institute has announced plans to develop a new cyber security technology that will create false information, network addresses and data to confuse hackers.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute’s (ETRI) security technology R&D project comes in the wake of growing risks of cyberattacks facing both the government and the business community.

In the past, hackers were able to disrupt information and communications technology infrastructure of government branches once they found a security weak spot.

However, dubbed ‘Active cyber self-defending technology’, the new technology, when complete, will protect data by presenting false information and tweaking IP addresses on a regular basis in order to hide weak spots in software and manipulate hackers.

Alongside the ETRI, the Korea Internet & Security Agency will build a self-learning cyber security immune system which will discover blind spots on its own and install software updates and patches, while solution company SecuLayer’s cyber security visualization program will help users react more swiftly to cyberattacks.

The ETRI says it plans to use the findings from the project in various fields of national infrastructure including IT, transport, finance and industry as a trial in the future.

In recent years, a growing number of cyberattacks targeting government branches and private firms have been reported in South Korea.

Last month, a hacker group called the Armada Collective targeted the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute (KFTC), Suhyup Bank, Daegu Bank, and Jeonbuk Bank after threatening to launch a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS), according to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS).
