SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – As South Korea’s “1,000-Won Breakfast” campaign gains momentum on college campuses, Sookmyung Women’s University has introduced a unique cultural twist by offering students a taste of Slovenian traditional breakfast.
On November 22, the university hosted the event, titled Breakfast with Slovenia for 1,000 Won, at its on-campus centenary hall. Organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Slovenia in Seoul, the program aimed to provide students with a cultural exchange experience while broadening their international perspectives.
Participants enjoyed Slovenian breakfast staples such as kruh (bread), honey, butter, and apples, all supplied by the Slovenian Embassy. Known as a global leader in beekeeping, Slovenia boasts four beekeepers for every 1,000 residents and actively promotes apiculture worldwide to combat climate change under its “Bee Diplomacy” initiative.
The Slovenian Embassy in Seoul has even installed beehives on its rooftop in partnership with the urban beekeeping social enterprise Urban Bees Seoul.
In addition to the Slovenian fare, the university served dishes like honey rice cakes, spinach frittata, salads, Greek yogurt, and coffee, valued at approximately 6,000 KRW, for just 1,000 KRW.
The initiative, part of the government-supported “1,000-Won Breakfast” program, was funded by contributions from South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Yongsan District, and Sookmyung Women’s University.
The event also featured a lecture by Slovenian Ambassador Jernej Müller, who introduced Slovenia’s history and culture under the national slogan “I Feel Slovenia.” This collaboration builds on prior cultural exchanges, including a September discussion between the ambassador and the university on educational and cultural partnerships.
Urban Bees Seoul’s CEO, Park Jin, followed with a talk on the significance of urban beekeeping and the vital role of bees in ecosystems.
Sookmyung Women’s University’s innovative approach highlights the growing trend of integrating cultural learning with practical initiatives, enriching students’ global awareness while addressing domestic food security issues.
