ASAN, Sept. 25 (Korea Bizwire) – Soonchunhyang University has announced a new initiative to provide students with a hearty breakfast for a mere 100 won, starting from the fall semester.
The program, revealed on September 24, aims to ensure students begin their day with a nutritious meal.
This move comes on the heels of a broader agreement signed in August between Soonchunhyang University, 14 other universities in South Chungcheong Province, the provincial government, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.
The agreement seeks to promote breakfast consumption among college students while simultaneously boosting the consumption of locally produced rice.
Under the terms of the agreement, high-quality rice will be supplied to universities at discounted rates to support student health and increase the consumption of local rice.
When universities purchase Asan malgeun rice for use in student cafeterias, the provincial government and the agricultural cooperative will subsidize 30% of the purchase price.
Soonchunhyang University, benefiting from this rice subsidy, has initiated the 100-won breakfast program in two of its Korean-style buffet cafeterias, Hyangseol 1 and Hyangseol 3.
The program will run until November 22, serving up to 400 students daily between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
In addition to the subsidized rice, 200 students each day will receive a more comprehensive meal including four types of side dishes made with local agricultural products, access to the Korean buffet, bread, beverages, and yogurt.
This isn’t Soonchunhyang University’s first foray into affordable breakfast initiatives. In 2012, the university pioneered a “1000-won breakfast” campaign, which became a benchmark for other institutions across the country.
The university continues to maintain this program alongside the new 100-won offering.
Kim Seungwoo, the president of Soonchunhyang University, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “A healthy breakfast is crucial for students’ academic performance and overall well-being. We’re proud to offer this program that not only supports our students but also our local agricultural community.”
