SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s top display makers, Samsung Display and LG Display, unveiled their latest cutting-edge technologies on Thursday, offering a glimpse into the future of screens in everything from wearables to next-generation vehicles.

The Korea Display Exhibition opened its three-day run in southern Seoul with 143 participating companies, including leading material, component, and equipment suppliers. The annual event has grown into a key industry forum for showcasing advances in screen technologies that increasingly shape the consumer electronics landscape.

Samsung Display drew early attention with the debut of its prototype OLEDoS (organic light-emitting diode on silicon) panel, a high-resolution technology tailored for extended-reality (XR) devices. Designed to meet the growing demands of virtual and augmented reality platforms, the panel is seen as a crucial building block in the race toward immersive digital environments.

The company also introduced a new MicroLED display, designed for wearable devices, that achieves a peak brightness of 6,000 nits—a significant leap from the 4,000-nit model it unveiled at CES 2025 earlier this year. Samsung noted that the display maintains brightness and color integrity even when bent, allowing for a wider range of flexible design applications.

In addition, Samsung Display formally launched a new brand, MONT Flex, dedicated to its foldable OLED panel lineup. The brand name, the company explained, encapsulates the panel’s core attributes: mechanically durable, opto-mechanically flat, narrow bezel enabling, and thin and light. The move signals Samsung’s continued commitment to expanding its leadership in the foldable device segment, where it already holds a dominant position.

LG Display, meanwhile, highlighted its own innovations, including a fourth-generation 83-inch OLED panel and a 14-inch Tandem OLED display, which features a dual-layer structure to deliver twice the brightness of conventional panels. The new panel also boasts lower power consumption and a slim, lightweight design made possible by a single-glass substrate.

“Our latest OLED innovations deliver both performance and efficiency,” the company said in a statement. “By advancing commercially viable technologies and reinforcing our R&D for future breakthroughs, we aim to secure long-term technological leadership and deliver distinctive value to our customers.”

The exhibition underscores the intensifying competition between Korea’s display giants as they seek to extend their dominance beyond traditional consumer electronics and into emerging sectors such as automotive displays, XR wearables, and energy-efficient screen solutions.
