SEJONG, March 16 (Korea Bizwire)Statistics Korea has announced the launch of a new service called ‘Neighborhood I’d Like to Live in’, that makes use of statistical geographic information system (SGIS) data. The service provides useful information that can help homebuyers decide where to live.

An individual know as ‘Lee’, who lived in Seoul for the past five years, was relocated to Sejong City. Having no connections or acquaintances in the area, Lee searched for help on Statistics Korea’s SGIS Plus homepage (http://sgis.kostat.go.kr) . After browsing information on schools, hospitals and facilities that were important to him, Lee was able to find a place to live that matched his needs.

Using Statistics Korea’s data as well as other public information, the system helps users find the most suitable home given their preferences.

A total of 27 indexes comprising seven categories including nature, residence, local population, safety, education, and transportation/culture/convenience lay out the present condition of a region in detail.

The system also suggests neighborhoods that meet users’ needs based on the key aspects and interests that they set.

The service is the realization of a project called ‘Finding My Dream House through Statistics’, which won a ‘Government 3.0 Outstanding Policy’ award last year.
