‘Stay at Home’ Trend, Ignited by COVID-19, Changes Consumption Landscape

SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Korea Bizwire)With the ‘stay at home’ trend spreading, ignited by the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, consumer demand for indoor household items has increased while that for fashion and decoration items such as jewelry has declined.

Lotte Home Shopping Inc., a shopping unit of retail conglomerate Lotte, analyzed the trend of product sales for the period from Aug. 15 to Sept. 6, when daily confirmed COVID-19 cases surged again.

During this period, the volume of jewelry orders marked a 40 percent decline compared to a year ago.

Orders for fashion and beauty items such as bags and shoes declined by 20 percent and 13 percent, respectively.

As outdoor activities decreased, travel item orders plunged by 80 percent, while sports and leisure item orders, which showed an upward trend between March and May when the COVID-19 crisis was in its initial stages, declined by 40 percent year on year.

In contrast, orders for home electronics items such as cleaners and stylers more than doubled, while those for kitchen items jumped by 95 percent year on year.

“With the resurgence of the COVID-19 cases centering on the metropolitan areas, demand for indoor life-related items is increasing again,” Lotte Home Shopping said.
