SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Korea Bizwire)A steel-cutting ceremony for South Korea’s first eco-friendly mixed fuel offshore demonstration ship was held last Friday at the Sapjin Industrial Complex in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province.

As part of a new eco-friendly cluster setup project, the steel-cutting ceremony was held to signify the launch of ship construction. The sea trial test ship will be 80 meters long and weigh 2,600 tons.

The offshore demonstration ship will be used to verify the performance and safety of eco-friendly alternative fuels as well as to test eco-friendly ship propulsion systems including the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel technology-based next-generation hybrid propulsion systems.

Eco-friendly mixed fuel is a fuel that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by mixing and burning non-carbon fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen with existing fuels.

The construction project will be supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the South Jeolla provincial government, and Mokpo’s city government, while the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering will take part as a lead research institute.
