SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — The growing number of single- or two-person households in South Korea is reflecting consumption trends that focus on convenience, altering sales of fruits.
Discount retailer Emart Inc. said Sunday that strawberries and grapes were the most popular fruits last year.
Apples and tangerines, which had topped the sales charts as recently as 2019, dropped to third and fourth place, respectively.
The rising consumption trend that focuses on convenience led consumers away from apples and tangerines, which require the skin or peel to be removed, to strawberries and grapes, which are easier to eat.
Premium strawberries accounted for 37 percent of all strawberry sales last year.
Meanwhile, grapes were not in the top five on sales charts as recently as 2019.
Now, sales of the Shine Muscat variety, grapes that can be consumed without removing the skin, have jumped since 2020.
