SEOUL, Jul. 5 (Korea Bizwire)A recent survey by KaKao, the operator of the nation’s largest music streaming service, Melon, found that subscribers to the service used the “music recommendation function” 28 percent more often on rainy days than on sunny ones.

The recommendations are based on the weather conditions of the day.

Especially between June 25 and 28 at the height of the monsoon season, subscribers used the recommendation function 40 percent more than a week earlier.

However, researchers found that this did not mean users listened to music more on rainy days.

Based on the weather conditions in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, music streaming was most popular on sunny days, followed by cloudy and rainy days, respectively.

The difference in the number of songs streamed on rainy and sunny days was 2.5 percent on average.

An official at Melon said that while people were not highly affected by the weather when it came to listening to music, the desire to seek recommendations was much higher on rainy days.

Recommendations based on user preferences have become all the rage in the industry.

Melon’s “For You” service recommends music by holistically analyzing an individual’s preferences, previous streaming trends, time of day, and the weather.

An official at Melon said that the weather has a big influence on users’ feelings, which is why it is a factor that must be reflected in music recommendations by music service providers.
