SUWON, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — The Gyeonggi Provincial Council plans to discuss the creation of ‘streets without cars’ to protect Gwangneung Forest, South Korea’s largest repository of diverse plant species and a biosphere reserve selected by UNESCO.
The council announced upcoming legislation on Friday that will stipulate the requirements of a ‘carless street’ in the forest, as well as the operation of eco-friendly public transportation and the renovation of parking lots using public funds.
Gwangneung Forest is one of South Korea’s largest forests that stretches across the three municipalities of Uijeongbu, Namyangju, and Pocheon. The forest was selected as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in June 2010.
The forest is home to more than 6,219 species of plants, insects, mammals, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles.
