GWANGJU, Sept. 24 (Korea Bizwire)A group of high schoolers have been lauded for building a self-driving vehicle that is now being used to carry waste at school.

A software club at Gwangdeok High School in the southwestern city of Gwangju, consisting of 18 student members from the 9th to 12th grades, recently built an autonomous driving vehicle using artificial intelligence (AI).

This self-driving car collects image data from a frontal camera and uses it to drive along the optimum route.

The school club recently gave presentations about the self-driving vehicle at school and began to use it to transport trash.

The car transports trash by traveling 500 meters back and forth from the garbage dump to the school’s main gate where the trash is picked up.

“We made the base of the car in May 2019, and decided to turn it into a self-driving vehicle using our experience working with AI models at last year’s AI machine learning model competition,” said Jeong Woo-bin, a senior at Gwangdeok High School.
