SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — With study preferences slowly changing, study cafes are gaining popularity among students.
The National Tax Service reported that the number of study rooms and schooling institutions, including study cafes, has been rising since 2017.
Reading rooms, however, have been on a constant decrease, except for 2020.
Unlike reading rooms with reserved seats and accepting long-term customers only, study cafes allow students to choose their seats freely, and pay by the hour.
Reading rooms also differ from study cafes in terms of interior design.
While reading room seats are separated and exclusive, study cafes are just like ordinary coffee shops with open spaces, which is one of the reasons why they are so popular among students, who are their primary customers.
“I don’t feel crammed in study cafes. I can sit wherever I like, and it’s easier to concentrate than in reading rooms,” said Kim Yu-na, an 18-year-old high school student.
