BUSAN, May 11 (Korea Bizwire)Surfers are expressing frustration over the anticipated reduction in the surfing zone at Songjeong Beach in Busan, one of the country’s most popular surfing spots.

In July and August, the Haeundae District Office plans to decrease the surfing zone to 120 meters, compared to last year’s 240 meters, due to the military’s plan to reopen their exclusive vacation area adjacent to the beach.

The beach, which spans 300 meters, falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defense.

During the summer, the Army’s 53rd Infantry Division has utilized up to 160 meters of the beach for summer vacations and combat swim training.

Surfers argue that their requirements differ from those of other beach visitors. They contend that it is unjust to impose the same restrictions on both surfers and general beachgoers.

With a length of 1.2 kilometers, Songjeong Beach will only have 10 percent of its area available for surfing.
