WONJU, Nov. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – Surveillance-equipped streetlights in Wonju, South Korea, are playing a pivotal role in crime prevention and resolution, including providing crucial evidence in a recent sexual assault case.

According to city officials on Friday, footage from a security camera embedded in a streetlight in the Dange-dong area earlier this year was instrumental in apprehending a suspect on rape charges. The video served as key evidence, leading to the suspect’s arrest and subsequent indictment.

As part of a municipal initiative, Wonju completed the installation of 436 surveillance streetlights between 2023 and November 2024, fulfilling a campaign promise under the city’s eighth local administration. With this, the program is now in its final stages.

“These streetlights significantly contribute to public safety by preventing crime and supporting efficient investigations,” a city official said. “We will continue to explore various measures to enhance the safety and security of our citizens.”

The innovative program highlights Wonju’s commitment to leveraging technology to create safer urban environments.
