Survival of the Fastest Clicker in War of Online Reservations

SEOUL, Feb.18 (Korea Bizwire)As concert tickets have typically been selling out as soon as they go on sale, fans of various artists say that fast fingers are a virtue in being a good fan. In the war of online reservations, only the ‘crazy clicking’ people survive.

Daum Soft, a big data analysis company, looked into the ‘crazy clicking’ phenomemon by analyzing 678 million blog pages and 8.3 billion tweets between January 1, 2011 and February 12, 2016.

‘Crazy clicking’ is a new term used among young people online. Pronounced ‘gwang-cl’ in Korean, the term refers to an individual clicking their mouse as if they are crazy, at the speed of light. The term was mentioned an average of 1.4 million times every year over the past five years.

Another term that sprung up from the severe competition for online reservations is ‘piketing’. Since the competition for ticket reservations is so severe it’s as if a bloodbath occurred, the Korean word for blood which is pronounced ‘pi’ is put together with ‘ticketing’, creating the term ‘piketing’. The word was mentioned 43,488 times in 2015, which was 17 times more frequent than the 2,575 mentions in 2011.

Other search words that were mentioned with the term ‘crazy clicking’ were ‘concert’ and ‘musical’, with their 894,285 mentions ranking first. This was also 10 times higher than the number of mentions for ‘travel’ (88,225), which ranked second, followed by ‘airplane’ (38,654), ‘baseball’ (33,508), ‘earlybird’ (13,604) and ‘course registration’ (10,005).

Emotion words related to ‘crazy clicking’ turned out to be more positive than negative. Positive mentions exceeded 50 percent, while mentions of negative emotions reached 20 percent.

People were ‘getting butterflies in their stomach’ (21,946 mentions), and felt ‘anticipation’ (22,516 mentions) before the ‘crazy clicking’, and were ‘overwhelmed’ (15,341 mentions) when they succeeded.

On the other hand, those who failed were ‘furious’ (15,108 mentions). Many blamed ‘fragile servers’ (49,879 mentions) as the cause of their failure.

The 5,955 retweets of a post on ‘how to calmly reserve tickets online’ shows the significance of interest in online reservations. The drill is to ‘1. Have some anxiety reducers’, ‘2. Start image training 10 minutes before tickets open’, ‘3. Tell yourself to be calm a minute before opening’, ‘4. Fail’, ‘5. Buy it from someone else who is selling their ticket’.
