Before, theater was classified as a specialized subject for arts school students, and was unavailable to regular high schools. Now that it will be changed to a general subject like music, art and physical education, students from ordinary high schools are excited to have a chance to learn the subject.

The Ministry of Education anticipates that students will broaden the depth of their knowledge and experiences through theater. “Students can learn the virtue of yielding through cooperation, and also learn about music, art, hairdressing and cinema as well.”

The education renewal will also apply to primary and junior high school students. Plays that were included in Korean will be enlarged to a whole chapter.

In addition to the changes coming to theater classes, the physical education program will be modified to place greater emphasis on safety drills, while music programs will have a larger portion of Korean traditional music in their curricula. As well, general classes about art will be established, including education on appreciating and reviewing artwork.
