PYEONGTAEK, March 15 (Korea Bizwire)A series of thefts at Samsung Electronics Co.’s chip plant in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, has become a major source of distress for the company’s workers.

According to the Pyeongtaek Police Office, an investigation was launched after a string of reports of smartphone thefts at a changing room on the fourth floor of the Samsung plant.

The place where thefts frequently occurred was a temporary smock room in addition to existing facilities that can be used by employees of subcontractors. The changing room does not have any anti-theft systems or devices in place.

After visiting the site, the police recommended that Samsung improve the poor crime prevention system.

The chip giant said that although it recently installed several anti-theft devices, including about 100 lockers, the number of thefts remained steady.

“Recently, there was an incident where more than 10 smartphones were stolen just in a single day,” said an employee of a subcontractor working at the Pyeongtaek facility.

Even outside the plant, there have been cases where bicycles and electric scooters used by some employees for commuting were stolen.
