SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Korea Bizwire) - Tottenham Hotspurs’ attacker Son Heung-min was chosen best athlete of the year in a survey carried out by Gallup Korea.
The 23-year-old earned 24.4 percent of the vote in the nationwide survey conducted on 1,700 men and women aged 13 and above between Oct. 29 and Nov. 21, Gallup said.
Son transferred to the Premier League from the Bundesliga in August. Last month, he was named the Asian International Player of the Year at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Annual Awards in New Delhi.
The footballer ranked 8th and 5th in the same survey in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
South Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae came second with 17.5 percent of the vote, while Texas Rangers outfielder Choo Shin-soo was a close third at 16.9 percent, according to Gallup.
“Every year, many of the top 10 places were taken by athletes in the two most popular fields of baseball and football,” the pollster said. “This year, there were four baseball players and three football players, all of whom are or were playing for foreign leagues.”
Other athletes in the top 10 included retired figure skating champion Kim Yu-na, Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yeung and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin.
The survey had a margin of error plus or minus 2.4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
