SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The risk of a traffic accident is significantly higher among Koreans over 70 years of age, and the risk rises even further among those over 80 years of age, a major non-life insurer said.
Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co. reported that between 2017 and 2021, the number of traffic accidents for individuals below 64 years of age dropped by 9.7 percent, while accidents among those over 65 years of age jumped by 19.2 percent.
The company analyzed the risk of traffic accidents among different age groups, which showed that there was no significant difference in the risk of accidents in the 65 to 69 age group (16 percent) and the 60 to 64 age group (15.2 percent).
The risk began to spike, however, for those from 70 to 74 (16.9 percent), 75 to 79 (18.8 percent), 80 to 84 (23.2 percent) and 85 to 89 (26.5 percent).
The company showed that the risk of degenerative myopia and other health symptoms that can affect driving safety begin to rise among those in their 70s.
