SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of pets traveling on Korean Air flights has more than doubled over the past four years, reflecting the growing demand for pet-friendly travel.
According to Korean Air, the total number of applications for pet transport—both as in-cabin companions and as checked baggage—reached 57,595 in 2024, a 12.6% increase from the previous year.
This figure has risen steadily each year, from 27,533 applications in 2020 to 51,151 in 2023. The 2024 numbers represent a 109.2% surge compared to 2020.

Notably, international flights have seen the most dramatic growth. In 2020, only 10,054 pets traveled on international routes, but by 2024, that number had skyrocketed to 36,263, marking a 260.7% increase.
Domestic pet travel grew more modestly, from 17,479 in 2020 to 21,332 in 2024, an increase of 22%.
The rise in pet air travel aligns with broader trends in pet-friendly tourism. A survey conducted by the Korea Tourism Organization found that 60.4% of pet owners had traveled domestically with their pets in 2024, up from 53.0% in 2022.
To cater to this growing demand, Korean Air has introduced programs like “SkyPets,” which rewards frequent pet travelers with points that can be redeemed for free pet transport.

The airline allows pets and their carriers weighing up to 7 kilograms to be brought onboard, while larger pets up to 45 kilograms must travel as checked baggage in the cargo hold. Eligible pets are limited to dogs, cats, and pet birds.
An airline official commented, “The demand for traveling with pets is expected to continue growing steadily in the coming years.”
As pet ownership and pet-friendly travel become more prominent in South Korea, airlines are increasingly accommodating furry and feathered companions, ensuring that pets can join their owners on journeys near and far.
