SEOUL, April 15 (Korea Bizwire) — A recent study has revealed that 2 in 3 teenagers don’t believe in the need to get married.
Last year, the state-funded National Youth Policy Institute conducted a survey of 5,740 middle and high school students from across the country, 59.9 percent of whom believed that they don’t need to get married if their partner doesn’t want to.
The results have gone up by 18.3 percentage points since 2008 (41.6 percent).
At 33.9 percent, roughly one third of the respondents believed that marriage is preferable, down by 7.4 percentage points since 2008 (41.3 percent).
Teenagers said they want to have an average of 1.5 children in the future, which was 0.5 lower than in 2008 (two children).
“The results are not unrelated to the lack of jobs among the younger generation, interrupted careers among women, the burden of child rearing, housing problems, and other social issues,” said the institute.
