SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Korea Bizwire)A recent study has revealed that recent back-to-back-to-back typhoons that hit the Korean peninsula last summer had an impact on wildfires that burned in the U.S. state of Oregon as their strong energy brought changes to the jet stream.

Researchers from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology said Tuesday that the three typhoons that hit the Korean peninsula during the two weeks from late August to early September last year – Bavi, Maysak, and Hyishen – marched northward, pushing the hot and humid energy of the tropical region towards the north.

Researchers explained that during such a process, the typhoons’ strong energy brought change to the jet stream.

The change in jet stream created a strong high atmospheric pressure on the west coast of the U.S. that created conditions favorable for wildfires in Oregon.

The research team noted that such a conclusion was based on various observation data on the course of typhoons in 2020 and the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS).

“Abnormally, three typhoons caused big damages on the Korean peninsula during a short period of two weeks,” said Professor Yoon Jin-ho, a member of the research team.

“They were strong enough to change climate patterns, which eventually led to the occurrence of wildfires in the U.S.”
