SEOUL, Jul. 9 (Korea Bizwire)The government announced today that it would be implementing a system that would see government regulators checking into hotels unannounced to ensure hotel rooms and food service offered by hotels are maintained in a safe and hygienic manner.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) said it would also be checking hotels to see if facilities and equipment for use in emergency situations are in place.

In addition, hotel employees will be quizzed on their knowledge of proper hygienic practices outlined by official manuals.

The cleanliness of hotels rooms, washrooms and dining halls will be assessed based on a hygiene monitoring system to ensure that the evaluation remains objective.

The MCST said that the new measures to be implemented are aimed to ensure demands by hotels guests that require safe and pleasant hotel services are met.

In addition, the MCST will carry out unannounced quality checks during the period when hotel ratings are still valid, to ensure that hotel operators are doing their best to maintain the level of quality that matches their current rating.

For hotels with a four or five-star rating, government officials will check into hotels unannounced at least once during a period of three years, which is the duration that the hotel rating is valid for.

For hotels with one, two or three-star ratings, those that were deemed unsatisfactory in terms of hygiene and service will be checked by an unannounced regulator.
