Margilan was once the main foothold of the Silk Road, and is the largest craftwork city for the “ikat,” a traditional pattern weaving technique.

During the workshop, four Uzbek craft masters will provide instruction on traditional ikat craft techniques to participants, while six Korean experts will give lectures on modern craft design and marketing, and will produce artwork together with the participants. Attendees are expected to learn traditional and modern techniques together at the workshop.

After the workshop, the organizer plans to exhibit the artwork in and outside Korea, and help Uzbekistan find ways to boost its craft industry.

Min Dong-seok, secretary general of KNCU, said, “Excellent students from craft colleges in Uzbekistan joined the workshop. The combination of experts from Korea and Uzbekistan is expected to produce highly marketable craftwork beyond the age and the place.”
