Use of Mobile Payment Services Rising as Non-Face-to-Face Consumption Becomes Routine

SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Korea Bizwire)As non-face-to-face consumption has become a daily routine following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Korean consumers are using mobile payment services more than actual debit or credit cards, a poll showed Wednesday.

According to an online survey conducted by the Korea Consumer Agency of 1,500 consumers who had used mobile payment services, the respondents used these services for 52.1 percent of their payments, higher than the 35.4 percent reported for credit and debit cards.

Consumers used mobile payment services frequently for purchasing items online (61.7 percent). The main usage places were online shopping portals (69.2 percent), convenience stores (12.5 percent) and large discount stores (6.6 percent).

Among the nation’s five major mobile payment platforms, Samsung Pay ranked first with a score of 4.06 on a five-point scale in terms of overall satisfaction, followed by Naver Pay at 3.89, Toss Pay at 3.86, Kakao Pay at 3.78 and Payco at 3.67.

When it came to the level of satisfaction by key factors of service products, payment convenience and accuracy marked the highest score of 4.29 points, while benefits and auxiliary services recorded the lowest score of 3.85, indicating the need to improve discounts and point offerings.

In terms of payment convenience and accuracy, Samsung Pay ranked first with a score of 4.48.

However, Naver Pay led the list in light of the ease of cancellation and issuance of refunds with a score of 4.11. Toss Pay ranked first in terms of benefits and auxiliary services with a score of 4.19.
