SEOUL, Dec.1 (Korea Bizwire) Health drinks containing vegetables like cabbage and extract from the Japanese raisin tree are proving to be popular choices among thirsty consumers.

One example is food company Pulmuone’s “We Love Cabbage and Broccoli”, of which 25,000 are purchased on average every day. Besides the cabbage and broccoli mentioned in its name, the drink also contains juice made from kale and other greens.

Other than its hit product, Pulmuone also sells cabbage juices produced through an extended fermenting process that greatly preserves the vegetable’s nutrients. To improve the flavor, fruits like apples and citrus products also incorporated into the mix.

Both Korea Yakult and Lotte Chilsung Beverage use the Japanese raisin tree in their health drinks. Korea Yakult takes the extract from the Japanese raisin tree in powdered form and the monacholin K found in red yeast rice, while Lotte uses the fruit of the Japanese raisin tree mixed with honey and pear.

An industry source said, “As the number of health-conscious consumers has increased, food and beverages companies are introducing more products using wholesome ingredients.”
