SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s veterans ministry said Monday it will launch a project to restore black and white photos of Korean and U.N. veterans who served in the 1950-53 Korean War to high-resolution color photos.
The project is part of efforts to memorialize the appearance of their younger days by restoring black and white photos using GFP-GAN (generative facial prior-generative adversarial network), an artificial intelligence (AI) tool.
The four heroes of the Korean War designated by the U.S. government — U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, U.S. Gen. Matthew Ridgway, Korean Gen. Paik Sun-yup and Korean Col. Kim Dong-suk — were selected first for such restoration.
Also included in the list of restoration are about 100 Korean War veterans whose photos remain today among those who were selected as War Heroes of the Month and the photos of the war kept by survivors.
