Walking Might be Faster than Moving by Car in Seoul

SEOUL, Sept. 4 (Korea Bizwire)According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Namdaemun-ro is the most congested area in Seoul. The average speed of cars traveling on the road that starts from Gwanggyo and leads to Sungnyemun Gate was 14 kilometers per hour.

Naruteo-ro, which stretches from Sindong Elementary School to Sinsa station, ranked second, with an average speed of 14.8 kilometers per hour. Marunne-ro (Myung-dong Chapel to Gwanghee-dong intersection, an average of 15.2 kilometers per hour), Bongeunsa-ro (Kyobo Tower intersection to back entrance of the sports complex, an average of 15.5 kilometers per hour) and Cheonggyecheon-ro (Cheonggye Plaza to Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation, an average of 15.5 kilometers per hour) followed as the most gridlocked areas.

In other areas that had heavy traffic, cars also moved at an average speed of 15 to 16 kilometers per hour.

Officials point out that measures have to be taken. “Traffic jams in urban area not only waste drivers’ time, but also cause energy loss and air pollution. A lot of economical and social costs are occurring because of the congestion.”
