DAEJEON, Aug. 22 (Korea Bizwire)Technological developments are on their way to use augmented reality (AR) in the driver’s seat to display navigation information on the windshield, increasing driving safety.

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) reported on Wednesday that patents related to navigation systems using AR technology have increased in number.

While there were only 14 patent submissions between 2009 and 2012, 113 patents have been submitted between 2013 and 2018.

AR navigation systems display traffic information, traffic lights, lanes, information on nearby buildings and areas on a head-up display (HUD) or a transparent display, which allows the driver to focus on driving without having to look elsewhere.

Among patents submitted over the last 10 years, 120 patents have been submitted by South Koreans (94 percent), and seven were submitted by foreigners (6 percent).

Hyundai Autron had the most patent submissions with 26 (20 percent), followed by Hyundai Motors (23 patents, 18 percent), Thinkware (15 patents, 12 percent), and LG Electronics (12 patents, 9 percent).

“AR navigation technology is expected to be a critical component of connected cars and autonomous driving vehicles and acquiring related technology and patents is important,” said Park Jae-il, head of Processing System Examination Division at KIPO.
