SEOUL, July 18 (Korea Bizwire) —Wireless charging for smartphones, earbuds, and in-car devices is poised to become significantly faster, as the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (TTA) announced Wednesday the launch of certification for a new global standard, “Qi v2.2.1.”
Developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC)—a coalition of over 350 companies including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Apple, and Philips—the new standard increases wireless charging power from 15 watts to 25 watts.
This enhancement is expected to reduce the time required to fully charge a smartphone wirelessly from around two hours to just 40 minutes.
Twelve companies and 15 products have already passed the initial testing phase for the new standard, with official certification expected by the end of this month.
Among South Korean firms, BH EVS stands out as the only domestic company so far to meet the certification criteria for in-vehicle wireless chargers under the upgraded standard.
