SEOUL, June 7 (Korea Bizwire) — A woman in her thirties who killed her newborn baby and sent the infant to her grandmother with a note asking her to give the dead baby a proper funeral was reportedly suffering from economic difficulties.
She had to work at a restaurant during the very last stages of her pregnancy, and could not even pay her monthly rent of 250,000 won. In addition, she hadn’t been receiving basic living subsidies, as she is not officially divorced from her husband, who left her.
On May 28, she gave birth and killed her newborn soon afterwards, according to her confession. She stayed with her dead baby for six days, and then sent the body in a box to her mother’s house in Naju on June 3.
Her mother received the box a day later and reported the incident to the police after opening the parcel, as she could not recognize the sender’s name on the box. On June 5, the police arrested the young woman for the abandonment of a dead body, by checking footage from a CCTV camera at the post office.
The young woman confessed that she killed the baby. Although she hasn’t been diagnosed with any intellectual disabilities, her neighbors told the police that her general ability to make judgments did not seem normal. She also has another daughter, who is currently staying at her mother’s home.
The police will request a warrant for her arrest on charges of infanticide, if the autopsy result confirms the information revealed in her confession.
