Women Account for Majority of Dating Abuse Victims

SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Korea Bizwire)Seven out of every 10 victims of dating violence in the past four years were women, a recent report has revealed.

The ratio of repetitive offenses also stands at nearly 70 percent, which critics say calls for urgent measures to prevent recurrence.

According to data received by Rep. So Byung-hoon from the National Police Agency, the total victims of dating violence between 2014 and August 2019 numbered 827. Of the total victims, women accounted for 571, or 69 percent.

On the other hand, it has been confirmed that 171 were male victims, for 20.6 percent of the total. In addition, 85 were victims of bilateral abuse, accounting for 10.2 percent.

The number of female victims has been declining, from 195 in 2016 to 120 in the first eight months of this year.

The number of male victims, on the other hand, has risen from five in 2016 to 26 in the first eight months of this year.

The number of victims of bilateral abuse was tallied at 28 as of August this year from four in 2016.

“There might be more cases of dating violence as most date abuse is likely to occur in a special relationship, meaning the abuse occurred between couples,” So pointed out.
