Wonju Festival Highlights Transformation of Mulberry into Beautiful Hanji Paper

WONJU, Apr. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The 21st Wonju Hanji (traditional Korean paper) Festival will open on May 2 and run through May 6 at the Wonju Hanji Theme Park located in Wonju, Gangwon Province.

Under the theme of “Variegated Colored Hanji, Back into Citizens,” the festival will feature programs to see the past, present and future of the paper centered on its main stronghold, the Hanji yard, the road of paper, the forest of hanji and a paper playground.

The signature program “Hanji Crafting” offers a complete process of paper mulberry, the original material, becoming hanji, and the transformation of hanji into beautiful artwork.

For five days, craftspeople will perform traditional Korean paper demonstrations, and visitors will be able to experience the production process of Korean paper, such as beating a paper mulberry tree and peeling a paper mulberry tree, at the site.

Furthermore, the “Colorful Hanji+Light” outdoor exhibition, which will decorate the entire venue with colorful hanji, will feature some 1,167 exhibition piece by teenagers, 3,000 lanterns and sculptures made with Hanji by kindergarten students and members of the general public.

A special invitation exhibition of representative artists of Hanji will also be held for visitors to enjoy the works of Hanji.

Paper playgrounds where daily competitions will be held during the festival, a hanji craft experience yard, a performance open stage, and a hanji artist handcraft art market will also be featured at the festival.
