SEOUL, April 10 (Korea Bizwire) — Traditional food once popular only among older generations is gaining popularity among the youth, including “yakgwa,” a deep-fried, wheat-based Korean confection.
Yakgwa sales at convenience store chain CU between March 29 and April 5 jumped by 248.3 percent compared to last year.
Its sales at GS25 also jumped by 226.8 percent last month compared to last year. Emart24 also reported an 84-percent year-on-year increase in yakgwa sales last month.
SPC Group’s bakery chain Paris Baguette released a new yakgwa tart last month, selling 100,000 of them just two weeks after their release.
BR Korea’s Dunkin Donuts released a honey-glazed yakgwa last January, selling 1.2 million of them since.
