YEONGDONG, Sept. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – Both the Korean Wine Festival and Yeongdong Nangye Traditional Music Festival have brought international recognition to Yeongdong County, showing the world just how far a successful event could go, local government officials said on Tuesday.

According to an official from the Yeongdong County government, the annual wine and traditional music festivals in the region received gold and silver medals, respectively, at this year’s general meeting of the International Festivals & Events Association.

Dubbed the ‘Olympics of festivals’, the annual event discovers and gives awards to a number of the most competitive festivals in the world.

During this year’s event, over 1,500 festivals entered from over 30 countries around the world.

Including the two medals won thanks to the festivals in Yeongdong County, the total number of gold medals won by South Korean festivals now stands at 10, making the country one of the most impressive festival organizers in the world.

The Yeongdong Nangye Traditional Music Festival was established in celebration of Park Yeon, one of the three most renowned divas in the traditional Korean music world.

Marking its 50th anniversary this year, the event will be held between September 21 and 24 this year, and will include a number of performances, parades, instrument experience events, as well as a traditional music singing competition, with the main theme being a look back on traditional Korean music over the last fifty years.

The county’s Korean Wine Festival will be held concurrently with the music festival.

Boasting over 43 local wineries, various types of wine with different tastes and smells are produced in Yeongdong County.

During the event, visitors purchasing a wine glass priced at 3,000 won can sample a wide range of red, white and rose wine, as well as participate in a number of events.
