SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — President Yoon Suk Yeol has requested that the National Assembly approve his appointment of Ma Yong-ju as a new Supreme Court judge, parliamentary records showed Friday.
The request is another move by Yoon that exercised his presidential power, although he has publicly pledged that he would entrust state affairs to the ruling party and the government, as political turmoil deepened over his botched imposition of martial law.
Yoon submitted Ma’s nomination as a top court judge Thursday, after defending his decision to declare martial law on Dec. 3 and vowing to fight against calls to step down.
Under the law, a Supreme Court judge nominee must undergo confirmation hearings and requires majority approval in the National Assembly to secure the appointment.
Yoon promised in a public address last Saturday to entrust state affairs to the ruling party and the government, but he has approved the resignation of Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and endorsed a series of laws and ordinances passed by the Cabinet earlier this week.
