SEOUL, April 4 (Korea Bizwire) – Fees owed for electronic litigation can now be paid using mobile phones, the Supreme Court of Korea announced last week.

Mobile payments will now be an available option for those who use the electronic litigation system on the website of the Supreme Court of Korea to deal with legal problems.

The latest move from the Supreme Court’s legal system to go mobile comes following calls for simpler payment methods including mobile payment, a payment method widely used for online shopping.

Before the introduction of mobile payments, litigators using the website were only allowed to make payment by either credit card or bank account transfer.

The new payment method is available to those apart from minors, users who are on pre-paid plans or those with unpaid phone bills, who are not prevented by their mobile network carriers from making mobile payments.

Litigators using their phones to make payments will be charged a commission fee equivalent to 7 percent of the litigation fee by their mobile network provider.

In response to questions regarding the expensive commissions, the court cited its higher rate of default compared to other methods of payment such a credit card as a reason.

As the maximum monthly amount of money available for spending varies depending on each individual and what mobile plan they are on, users of the electronic litigation system are advised to consult first with their mobile network carrier.

“You have to have agreed with your carrier first to be able enjoy the new payment method, and those who use a budget phone from SK can’t make mobile payments,” one official at the Supreme Court of Korea warned.

The official also said the new update is “part of our efforts to provide South Koreans with various payment methods to bring more convenience” to the judicial system.
