INCHEON, Apr. 5 (Korea Bizwire) — A YouTuber in his 40s has been referred to prosecutors for further investigation and potential indictment on charges of installing spy cameras at about 40 polling stations ahead of the April 10 parliamentary elections, officials said Friday.
The YouTuber has been under police custody since last week as a suspect behind spy cameras found installed at early voting stations and ballot count locations across the country, including Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu and Gyeonggi Province.
The cameras were disguised as communications equipment and placed in a way that could record the interior of polling stations. Police retrieved most of the cameras the suspect has confessed to placing.
The Nonhyeon Police Station in Incheon, west of Seoul, said that the YouTuber was referred to the prosecution on charges of trespassing and violations of the communications secret protection act.
In a prior investigation, he told police that he wanted to monitor the National Election Commission’s manipulation of turnout rates for early voting.
The YouTuber has reportedly raised election manipulation suspicions on the video sharing platform in the past and was confirmed to have installed spy cameras at early voting stations for the 2022 presidential election and other elections.
Police have also arrested two men as suspected accomplices in the camera installation.
Early voting for the upcoming elections began on Friday across the nation for a two-day run.
