SEOUL, April 11 (Korea Bizwire) — A new survey has found nearly 1 in 5 South Korean part-time workers are getting paid less than the nation’s minimum wage.
According to the results of a survey conducted by part time job search portal Alba Heaven, over 20 percent of respondents worked for an hourly wage that was lower than 7,530 won, which is the government-mandated minimum wage for this year.
In another survey jointly conducted with Youth Labor, a group that seeks to protect the rights of young workers, 1 in 2 workers said they received the minimum wage, while 29.1 percent said they earned more than the minimum wage.
In the meantime, the share of part-time workers who didn’t receive severance pay despite meeting the requirements stood at 63.5 percent.
According to Clause 4 of the Employee Retirement Benefit Security Act, part-time workers who work 15 hours per week on average for over two years are eligible to claim severance pay.
“The younger part-time workers are, the less likely they are to receive severance pay. Teenagers who aren’t in school are particularly at risk of being left in the workers’ rights blind spot,” an official at Alba Heaven said.
