SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The government plans to develop appliances that can recycle used batteries.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced Monday that it will invest 13 billion won (US$11.7 million) to develop technology for recycling used batteries by 2024.

Batteries used for electric vehicles (EVs) and other appliances will become capable of being recycled for making energy storage systems (ESS), streetlamps and others.

Since these batteries are used under different conditions, however, proper assessment should be in place to ensure that there are no gaps in their capacity and safety when recycled.

In response, the ministry will develop technologies for assessing battery capacity and safety, mobile appliances, and megawatt-grade ESS, paving the way for the development of various recycled appliances for golf carts, motorized wheelchairs, electric motorcycles and electric bicycles.
