S. Korea Celebrates Endangered Species Day

SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire)The National Institute of Ecology on Friday held a ceremony for the third anniversary of Endangered Species Day at Seoul Zoo in Gwacheon, south of Seoul.

Endangered Species Day was first proclaimed in 2021 in remembrance of April 1, 1987, when South Korea designated its first endangered species.

In South Korea, some 282 animals including mountain goats and leopards have been designated as endangered species.

Seoul Zoo is the country’s first preservation agency outside of the wild habitat.

Preservation agencies are institutions designed to systematically protect animal species struggling to survive in the wild amidst the destruction of habitat and poaching.

There are currently 28 preservation agencies in the country.
