SEOUL, July 6 (Korea Bizwire) – A new OLED TV, soon to be released by Samsung Electronics Co., will feature an LG Display Co. panel.
Industry sources said Samsung recently included an 83-inch OLED 4K TV in its July-August catalog, expanding its existing lineup of 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch OLED televisions.
While the release date is yet to be confirmed, insiders suggest that the TV is expected to hit the market no later than July or August.
“We are preparing to launch an 83-inch OLED television to offer more choices to our customers,” Samsung said.
“However, the company has not finalized the release date or price for the new product.”
The 83-inch TV is said to be equipped with LG Display’s White OLED (WOLED) panel.
It’s worth noting that LG Display is the sole manufacturer of displays for 83-inch TVs, as Samsung Display Co., Samsung Electronics’ primary supplier, does not produce panels of that size.
This new collaboration between Samsung Electronics and LG Display holds the potential for a mutually beneficial ‘win-win’ scenario in terms of sales.
While Samsung Electronics currently dominates the global TV market, it faces strong competition from price-competitive Chinese manufacturers. Hence, the growth of the premium OLED TV market becomes crucial.
On the other hand, LG Display, grappling with losses amid the global economic downturn, may see a path to profitability through this alliance.
“Starting next year, it is expected that Samsung Electronics will take up all of LG Display’s surplus production capacity of 2 million large OLED panels,” said Kim Dong-won, a researcher at KB Securities.
