SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – In a significant step towards international standardization of urban infrastructure, South Korean-style street signs are set to appear in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, marking the first overseas implementation of South Korea’s addressing system.
The South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on September 22 that Minister Lee Sang-min would be visiting Ulaanbaatar until September 24 to promote the Korean addressing system, known as K-Address, and support Mongolia’s efforts to build a digital government.
This visit follows a memorandum of understanding signed in Seoul this May, where South Korea agreed to support Mongolia’s address system modernization project and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Lee’s agenda includes meeting with Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrain to discuss the address system modernization and digital government cooperation.
The ministry plans to provide a K-Address-based Mongolian address system modernization roadmap to facilitate the project’s smooth implementation.
A highlight of the visit will be the unveiling ceremony of Korean-style street signs on Seoul Street in Ulaanbaatar.
This marks the first instance of installing street signs reflecting the Korean addressing system abroad, which the ministry views as a crucial starting point for globalizing K-Address.
The Korean road name address system is distinguished by its comprehensiveness, incorporating not only building addresses but also object addresses (for facilities) and space addresses (for open areas).
This system was recognized as an international standard best practice by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) last year.
“The Korean-style street signs installed in Ulaanbaatar represent the first step in applying the internationally recognized K-Address to Mongolia’s address system modernization,” Lee stated.
“We will actively cooperate in modernizing Mongolia’s address system and support our companies in entering new address-related businesses there.”
Additionally, Lee will meet with the Mongolian Minister of Cabinet Affairs to discuss cooperation on digital government initiatives, including a preliminary feasibility study for constructing Mongolia’s digital ID system.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed, which the ministry expects will create opportunities for South Korean IT companies to expand into the Mongolian market.
