JEJU, Aug. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is set to build smart electric vehicle charging stations on Jeju Island for the first time in South Korea as part of efforts to deliver on a commitment to make the island carbon-free by 2030.
According to the Jeju branch of KEPCO on Tuesday, smart charging stations packed with features like fast charging and multi charging will be built in two different locations, one in Jeju City and the other in Seogwipo City.
The buildings housing the proposed charging stations will feature energy saving equipment such as a vehicle-to-grid system, solar power and wind power generators as well as an energy storage system, accompanied with other facilities including electric car repair centers, a shopping mall and a sky lounge, serving a crucial role in the smart city.
When the 30 billion won smart city construction project is complete, between 200 and 500 vehicles should be able to charge and park at the same time.
In the meantime, the Jeju branch of KEPCO will lay out plans in detail for the design, purpose, functions and budget of the charging stations, as well as choosing contractors to work with by the end of next month, with the construction project set to be completed sometime early next year.
“The charging stations will offer services ranging from electric car charging to sales and purchases. We are pursuing this construction project with the purpose of creating a new business model to meet the growing demand for electric vehicle charging,” said Hwang Woo-hyun, the director of the Jeju branch of the KEPCO.
