SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Korea Bizwire)Korea Post will acquire some 10,000 single-seat electric vehicles (EVs) by 2020 to enhance the efficiency of its delivery system, the national postal service president said Thursday.

“Korea Post plans to deploy small battery powered vehicles,” Korea Post President Kang Seong-ju said during a meeting of officials. He added that mail carriers will have more flexibility and means to deliver a broad range of goods, ranging from ordinary mail to bulky parcels.

The small motorcycles currently used by carriers can carry only up to 35 kilograms of parcels, compared with 150 kg by electric cars, Korea Post said.

The service is set to kick off a pilot program using the EVs in March.

After the pilot program, Korea Post will map out a detailed plan for the appropriate load-carrying capacity of the vehicles.
