SEOUL, June 1 (Korea Bizwire) – A Korean research team has come up with a new technology to make flexible graphene transistors that can transfer graphene material without the use of water and maintain performance in a humid environment.

Graphene, two-dimensional pure carbon in the form of a very thin, nearly transparent sheet, one atom thick, is remarkably strong for its very low weight and conducts heat and electricity with great efficiency. It is considered a next-generation electronic material expected to replace silicon.

Until now, graphenes have been created through the method of chemical vapor deposition and transferred them onto thin silicon dioxide or silicon carbide wafers. When transferring graphenes to copper-based wafers, it was almost impossible to do so with conventional methods as copper is sensitive to water.

The researchers at the Polymer Research Institute, Pohang University of Science and Technology recently published a journal article “Water-Free Transfer Method for CVD-Grown Graphene and Its Application to Flexible Air-Stable Graphene Transistors” that reported a successful water-free transfer of graphenes.

A staff of the research team said, “The latest study suggested a technique to improve the safety feature and mechanical properties of graphene transistors, the most basic element of graphene-based electronic components. We expect the newest technique to make important contributions to commercialize graphene electronic devices and high-performance flexible electronic devices.”
